教育機関で学んだだけで僧侶の資格を取得できる宗派もあれば、厳しい修行を成満しなければ僧侶の資格を得ることができない宗派もあります。
Q どうしたら日蓮宗の僧侶になれますか？
まず師僧となる方を探すところから始まります。
僧侶になるまでの各種手続きは師僧が行うため、師僧なしでは僧侶になることはできません。
日蓮宗の僧侶になるための流れは以下の通りです。
① 得度：出家の儀式です。通常は師僧のお寺で行います。
② 度牒： 千葉にある日蓮宗大本山「清澄寺」にて一泊二日で行われる儀式に師僧と参列します。
③ 学問：立正大学または身延山大学に通学して僧階科目を履修します。
④ 読経考査：各管区で開催されるお経の試験に合格する必要があります。
⑤ 僧道林：4泊5日の修行となります。
③④⑤の順番は決まっていません。
③の大学への通学は、身延山大学で行われる検定試験に合格できれば免除されます。
④の読経考査と⑤の僧道林は宗門が定めた機関で修行と教育を一定期間受けた者は免除されます。
⑥信行道場：山梨県身延山の「信行道場」での35日間の修行を行います。
上記の内容が全て終われば日蓮宗僧侶としてのスタートラインに立つことができます。
Q 定年退職後、日蓮宗の僧侶を目指せますか？
多くの修行僧は二十代のため、自分の子供または孫世代と一緒に修行をすることとなります。
体力面でかなりのハンデがありますが、60代の方でも修行を終えられる方はいます。
修行中、1〜2時間連続で正座をすることが多いため、少なくても1時間はじっと正座ができなければ修行を成満することはできません。
Q 戒名は必要なのですか？
人は死後49日の間に「成仏」するための旅にでます。
「成仏」とは仏になることです。
その準備の一つが「戒名（日蓮宗では法号）」です。
この戒名は菩提寺の住職が、故人の人生を鑑み経典などから文字を選び授与します。
「戒名」は故人の生前の「修行の結果」を表す必要があります。
そのため「戒名ではなく俗名がいい」「自分で戒名を決めたい」「インターネットで戒名が買った」というのは本義からはずれています。
「戒名」が必要・不要は人それぞれですが、仏教を信仰している仏教徒は、成仏のため「戒名」を授与されるべきだと考えます。
